What Is Overtime Pay?

Overtime pay is the additional amount an employee receives for working extra hours beyond their normal contracted hours. While many employers offer enhanced overtime rates, there is no legal requirement in the UK for overtime to be paid at a higher rate unless it is stated in your employment contract.

Some employers pay:

  • Normal hourly rate (1x)
  • Time and a Half (1.5x)
  • Double Time (2x)

The overtime rate you receive depends on your employer’s policy or your employment agreement.

How Overtime Pay Is Calculated

The calculation uses three simple formulas.

Regular Pay

Hourly Rate × Regular Hours Worked

Overtime Pay

Hourly Rate × Overtime Multiplier × Overtime Hours

Total Gross Pay

Regular Pay + Overtime Pay

For example:

Hourly Rate: £20

Regular Hours: 40

Overtime Hours: 8

Overtime Rate: Time and a Half (1.5x)

Regular Pay

£20 × 40 = £800

Overtime Pay

£20 × 1.5 × 8 = £240

Total Gross Pay

£800 + £240 = £1,040

UK Overtime Rules

There is no UK law requiring employers to pay overtime at an increased rate. Whether overtime is paid at the normal hourly rate or at an enhanced rate depends on the terms of your employment contract.

However, employers must ensure that your average hourly earnings do not fall below the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage after taking all working hours into account.

If you’re unsure how overtime is paid in your workplace, check your employment contract or speak with your employer.
